my nineties crush

              there was this girl         a very pretty girl
              it was an infatuation       I was scared to death of her
              I had it                    had it bad
              for a long                  too long
              long                        sickenly long
              time

              and we talked               finally, after I became human
              but disagreed               not a long conversation
              on                          what else
              politics

              friends teased me           of course
              but you must                if you are to understand me
              realize this:               please, it's easier this way
                   I'd rather be right    it's easier to be right
                                than be in love
